Google Fixes Orkut Worm Attack

Google security personnel clamped down to stop the spread of a prolific spam worm launched on its social networking site Orkut.

The worm, which was reported yesterday by McAfee Avert Labs, had gained ground by spreading quickly from friend to friend. The virus affected the profiles of almost 400,000 of its members, most of which were from Brazil. While Google initially aimed Orkut toward users in the United States, the networking site has become incredibly popular in Brazilian communities.

The worm was transmitted when members received malicious scraps written in Portuguese. When translated to English, one scrap read, "2008 is coming. I wish that it begins quite well for you."

Upon receiving the scraps, the members' browsers then downloaded and executed the embedded virus. After adding its victims to a community called "Infectados Pelo Virus Orkut" or "Those Infected by the Orkut Virus," the worm then started to send messages to members of the affected user's friends list.

The virus spread through Orkut's new tool that allows users to write messages containing HTML code. The ability to add Flash/Javascript content to Orkut scraps was only recently introduced.

First Hand With Firefox 3 Beta 2

ZDNet has taken a look at the second beta version of Firefox 3. The reporter says Firefox 3 feels faster and more responsive again and features improved memory management.

But it’s not new features that I’m interested in, it’s performance and reliability - so how does Firefox 3.0 Beta 2 stand up? Well, it’s only been out a few hours but I’ve been hammering it hard on several systems and my feeling is that beta 2 is a significant improvement on beta 1.

Functionally and visually, beta 1 and beta 2 are hard to tell apart, but after a few seconds of using them side-by-side I think that I could tell them apart on pretty much any system. Beta 2 feels snappier and far more responsive than beta 1 (or Firefox 2.0 for that matter) and I can feel the difference on all the systems that I’ve tried it on - from a lowly Sempron system to my quad-core monsters. No matter what you want doing - opening a new tab, moving tabs, opening up Find, zooming in and out of the page, bookmarking - it all happens swiftly and smoothly. Finally, Firefox feels like it’s back to being faster and more responsive than Internet Explorer. The bloat seems to have been trimmed away and what remains is fast.

There's really nothing useful about this tip, but it's still pretty cool. There's a utility built into Windows Vista used for benchmarking your system called the System Assessment Tool. What most people don't know is that you can call this utility from the command line and view some cool 3D benchmarks.

You should be able to use a regular command prompt, but you'd have best luck using an administrator mode command prompt. (right-click and choose Run as Administrator). You should also note that it will temporarily disable Aero before running the test, but don't worry, it will re-enable it after.

Increase Internet Explorer Download Limit

If you have ever tried to download several things simultaneously through Internet Explorer then you may have noticed that it doesn't work quite the way you may have hoped it to. This is because IE limits the amount of simultaneous downloads to two. This is done so that the perceived download progress appears to be tolerable. If you have a high speed connection then your browser should be able to handle a few more downloads. Here is 2 steps that will increase the simultaneous download tasks from IE and also increase their speeds.

This is to increase the the number of max downloads to 10.

#1. Start Registry Editor.Type regedit command in Run.

#2. Locate the following key in the registry:

Prevent Access To Certain Drives

This restriction prevents users from My Computer or the Windows Explorer to access the contents of selected drives.Also they will not be able to use Run,Map Network Drive,or the "Dir" command to view the directories on these drives.

Type "regedit" and navigate to :

For example,to hide drive A and drive C,you would add 1(for A)+4(for C) to get 5, and the value of NoViewOnDrive should be set to 5.To disable all the drives,set the value to 67108863.

You'll need to restart Windows to see the effect take place.

Note: Back up the whole registry and then apply the above hack so that if some thing goes wrong you can get to the old state.

Reclaim Your Optical Drive

The registry contains two basic kinds of elements: keys and values.

Registry Values are name/data pairs stored within keys. Values are referenced separately from keys. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

Abbreviated HKCR, HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT stores information about registered applications, such as Associations from File Extensions and OLE Object Class IDs tying them to the applications used to handle these items.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER

Abbreviated HKCU, HKEY_CURRENT_USER stores settings that are specific to the currently logged-in user.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

Abbreviated HKLM, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE stores settings that are general to all users on the computer.

HKEY_USERS

Abbreviated HKU, HKEY_USERS contains subkeys corresponding to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER keys for each user registered on the machine.

HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG

Abbreviated HKCC, HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG contains information gathered at runtime; information stored in this key is not permanently stored on disk, but rather regenerated at boot time.

HKEY_PERFORMANCE_DATA

This key provides runtime information into performance data provided by either the NT kernel itself or other programs that provide performance data.
